WE ARE MORE – a Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign

Whether at local, regional, national or European level, cultural policies and funding have to reflect the needs of all those who enjoy and produce today’s and tomorrow’s culture. We believe that it is necessary to re-imagine public investment to contribute to developing human, cultural and social capital – Europe’s most precious assets. The concrete goals of the campaign are to increase support for cultural activities that benefit all European citizens and stimulate their enjoyment of the arts.

we are more (2010-2013) is a Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign set up by Culture Action Europe. It will use the upcoming EU political and financial negotiations for the period 2014-2020 as a timely opportunity to develop and sharpen the arguments used when advocating for arts and culture. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of our European societies. The concrete campaign objectives focus on improving the quality and quantity of support that the sector receives from 2 key EU policies (the Culture Programme – providing direct support to cultural co-operation projects, and EU regional development policies – supporting cultural interventions as key contributions to social, economic and territorial development). The aim is for the campaign to function both as an eye-opener for policy-makers at local, regional and national level, and as a mobilisation and professional development tool for the sector.

We ask for:

A bold and daring Culture Programme for the period 2014-2020 that will fund cutting edge artistic and cultural experimentation around our common European concerns and aspirations. A programme that will support innovative cultural co-operations, and experiment with new artistic, intercultural, social and economic models. An earmarked and enhanced support for cultural interventions and cultural investment in the EU regional development funds, with the building of human, cultural and social capital, sustainable development, social inclusion, cultural participation and enhanced citizenship and governance as objectives. Why now?

We are launching this campaign to influence the next EU budget negotiations for the 2014-2020 period. The EU budget will be negotiated over the next two years and we want to make sure that the EU contribution to culture is explicit and with a stronger financial envelope.

Who’s behind the campaign?

The we are more campaign is launched by Culture Action Europe, the umbrella advocacy organisation for the arts and culture in Europe. It is carried out in strategic partnership with the European Cultural Foundation.

Culture Action Europe currently has over 100 members that together represent over 50.000 arts and culture players across Europe and beyond – in more than 14 artistic disciplines. The campaign is run in an open source way, and provide tools on the campaign website that encourage and facilitate for the entire culture sector as well as individuals to get involved in and support the campaign.

Why the name we are more?

we are more is a positive message that communicates the multiple ways in which individuals, communities and arts organisations do more, and contribute more than is superficially apparent.

The EU is more than coal and steel, we need more than a single market, we are more than mere consumers.

We are many organisations built up by individuals who value and act for culture in Europe.

We are citizens, parents, arts organisations, lovers of culture, and active participants in society.
